On Wednesday, August 20, 2014, the Long Beach Superior Courthouse will be hosting a seminar for criminal lawyers on the subject of the immigration consequences of criminal conviction for non-citizens. The Criminal Law Section of LBBA's Brown Bag Luncheon will feature the Honorable Laura Laeseche, Judge presiding District 1 of Long Beach and Certified Immigration Specialist Angela Novas McGill, Attorney at Law.
As Chair of the Criminal Law Section LBBA, our very own criminal attorney Leonard Matsuk will be moderating the discussion, which will surround the implications of the Supreme Court's decision on Padilla v. Commonwealth of Kentucky and the implications for criminal attorneys representing non-citizens in the United States.
In the case of Padilla v. Kentucky, the Supreme Court stated that criminal defense attorneys have a constitutional obligation to counsel their non-citizen clients on the possibility or immanency of deportation as a result of conviction or guilty-plea. The discussion, moderated by Attorney Leonard Matsuk, will discuss the minimum requirements of this decision, the duties of the defense counsel in circumstances that qualify, consequences of certain crimes of moral turpitude, post-conviction relief and plea strategies where there may be immigration consequences.
The event is taking place this Wednesday at the Long Beach Superior Courthouse, beginning at noon PST and ending at 1:30 PST.
